These paintings were developed from sketches made at Haneda Airport, and stem from the yearning attached to air travel.
I remember trips to Sydney Airport as a young child, usually to collect or farewell my aunty Rita. She spent all of her adult life traveling and living in various foreign countries, and planted the seed that if you wanted to go somewhere, you go. Back then, the gates were lined with rows of jumbos. The huge planes baked in the sun, blinding light reflecting off the gloss and chrome. There is much sentimentality surrounding the phasing out of older aircraft models such at the 747. It now survives predominantly as a cargo vessel, ploughing away, almost out of view, in muted grays.
Airports are places where the sadness of endings collides with the excitement of the new. These transitory spaces heighten emotions and often solicit a re-examining of oneself.

These paintings were developed from drawing studies and imagination. Some works depict a specific location and season, and others are a collection of different times, places and memories. They are accumulations of experiences and imaginings.
Here/Not Here refers to the subject matter being both real and invented, and painted in a different location to where the drawing studies were made. It also alludes to the sense of disassociation one can feel when living in a different culture.
These works attempt to evoke “the imperturbable nature of foliage” , as well as Japan’s distinct and rapidly changing seasons. Living in Tokyo has changed my attitude towards nature. The density of the city forces one to contemplate the natural environment via its absence. This evokes Ridley Scott’s vision in Bladerunner, where nature exists only in dreams, or in memories that may or may not be real.
